Losing Control in Control is a video work that documents the actual creation process behind the installation series Metamorphosis. Through an artistic visual language, the film captures every key stage where the artist’s hand interacts with matter—from clipping her hair and transforming it into “hair-ink,” to drawing intricate growth pathways on copper plates, and ultimately collaborating with nature.
At its core, the piece unfolds as a continuous metaphor: it reflects our innate desire to control every detail in order to fulfill our subjective aims and our obsession with certainty. Yet, as the process evolves, it becomes evident that absolute control is an illusion. Invisible forces—such as temperature, humidity, and microbial activity—silently influence the outcome, gradually shaping the copper’s surface in ways that defy human intervention. The final result is not solely dictated by deliberate action; it is a hybrid creation, borne of both human intent and natural emergence—a vivid illustration of the law that governs our existence: the art of “losing control in control.”
This work is part of a broader exploration that includes the series Metamorphosis, the video Seed, and the installation Growing. Together, these pieces delve into the complex, nuanced relationship between humanity and nature. Whether depicting the synergy between hair and copper, the slow birth of blue crystalline structures, or the dynamic interplay captured in this video, the artist poses a central question: Can we ever truly master our environment, or must we learn instead to collaborate with the forces of nature?
By merging deliberate human intervention with the unpredictable rhythms of the natural world, Losing Control in Controlinvites viewers to reconsider the boundaries between control and chaos, urging us to embrace a creative future where art, science, and nature co-evolve.
